The Suzuki Jimny, a very popular and much loved 4x4 has a 1500cc engine.

🔥A 4x4 has a strong suspension
The suspension of a 4 wheel drive and its 2 wheel drive counterpart is the same. The difference is the drive train which, while found underneath, is not part of the suspension

🔥A 4x4 has high clearance
The Suzuki sX4 is a hatchback with 4 wheel drive. Many Volvo sedans also have 4 wheel drive Many SUVs that have high clearance lack a drive train and hence also do not have 4x4 capabilities

🔥A 4x4 can drive top speed down a dirt road with potholes with no consequence
Based on the belief of the first 3 myths many inexperienced drivers belief this one and subsequently act on it only to find out that radiators, bumpers, AC hoses to name but a few, can get damaged. They often blame this on the road when indeed it is related to their belief that 4x4s are capable of something which they are not.

🔥A 4x4 will NEVER get stuck. If it does it’s not a 4x4
For a 4 wheel drive vehicle to move forward it needs to have at least SOME traction. If none of the wheels have ANY traction you will get stuck whether in a 4x4 or not.

What is a 4x4 then?

A 4x4 is a system whereby if not all the wheels have traction, the car will still move forward using the traction that is available

Under which circumstances do I need a 4x4?

Specifically in conditions where there would be a loss of traction. These include:

• ❄️ Snowy wet or muddy surfaces.
• 🪨 Loose surfaces such as gravel or sand
• 🏖️ Uneven services where not all four tires would be able to place the same amount of pressure on the surface

If you are told that you need a 4x4, expect loose, wet, uneven or muddy surfaces and be prepared to drive in these conditions

Do I need to be an experienced 4x4 driver to drive a 4x4 in Costa Rica?

No. But most inexperienced drivers forget that:

• 🚙The slower you drive the more traction you get
• 🚙Driving fast down gravel roads can cause just as much damage to a 4x4 as with any other vehicle
• 🚙When driving an automatic 4x4, in tricky situations to use the lower gears
